How To Get The MCNP Code

Not a LANL Employee?

The MCNP code is distributed to its worldwide user community by the Radiation Safety Information Computational Center (RSICC), which is based at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Because the MCNP code is export controlled, the distribution through RSICC is governed by US laws and Department of Energy regulations. US citizens may request either the executable-only distribution package or the distribution package that includes source coding. Non-US citizens should generally request the executable-only distribution package to avoid possible delays in approval.

The MCNP6 distribution package from RSICC includes executables for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The package also includes documentation (release notes & user manual), numerous verification and validation problems, a variety of utility programs and scripts, and numerous ACE-formatted nuclear data libraries.

For further information or specific questions regarding obtaining MCNP6 from RSICC, please contact RSICC directly using the RSICC email.

University Students

The MCNP team receives feedback regarding difficulty that some undergraduate and graduate university students face who require the MCNP code for their coursework. Through communication with RSICC, students can do the following to position themselves to receive the MCNP code as quickly as possible:

  • Have the course instructor write a detailed end-use statement.
    • A copy of the course description is not an acceptable end-use statement.
    • The course instructor can request RSICC to review the end-use statement before the requests are made to ensure it is acceptable.
  • Use a mailing and email address associated with the university.
    • This is particularly important for remote students because it helps RSICC to verify that the requestor is indeed a student at the university.
    • Using a non-university related email addresses is not acceptable.
  • Submit the RSICC software request as early as possible.
    • The turnaround time for properly organized university student requests is typically two weeks but may take longer depending on the number of requests received.
    • RSICC receives the most requests in late August and early September.
    • RSICC processes requests on a first-come first-served basis.
